Updated November 2026
Yes. On a first visit, I would not skip Avatar Flight of Passage, even with a 70+ minute wait. It's unlike any other ride, because it's a mounted flight simulator.
But it's not something we do every time. Our longest wait was 75 minutes, in June 2026. That day we went to the park just for Flight of Passage and to eat at Nomad Lounge. So we waited.

What You're Waiting For
On Avatar Flight of Passage, you climb onto a mountain banshee for a 3D flight over Pandora. It's the famous ride in Pandora at Animal Kingdom.
Height: 44 in (112 cm) · Lightning Lane: Single Pass, not part of Multi Pass
Inside the Avatar Flight of Passage Queue: Every Room and What to Spot
The queue is half the experience, and it tells a story. You're a visitor joining the Pandora Conservation Initiative's avatar program, getting matched to an avatar so you can fly a banshee. For the Na'vi, that first flight is a rite of passage called Iknimaya. Each room gets you one step closer.
The Flight of Passage Outdoor Queue
You start outside, winding through Pandora's plants under the floating mountains.
Fun find: look up at the distant mountains. A few of the waterfalls are painted spinning wheels. Before the forest section, there's also a rusted wall marked “JC Shoring,” and the numbers underneath, 08.016.54, are James Cameron's birthday.

The Na'vi Cave and Glowing Plants
Inside the mountain, the carved walls are covered in Na'vi paintings honoring the banshees. Then the plants around you start to glow.

The Pandora Conservation Initiative Research Lab
This is the Pandora Conservation Initiative's lab, with a banshee skeleton, the scientists' work stations and a full-size avatar floating in a tank.
Fun find: watch the avatar for a moment, and you'll see it move slightly. Then check the shelf next to a baseball for Jane Goodall's Reason for Hope and Dr. Grace Augustine's Pandoran Botany.

Pre-Show 1: The Avatar Matching Room
In the first pre-show, Dr. Stevens explains how you're genetically matched to your avatar.
Pre-Show 2: The Flight Briefing
In the second pre-show, you get your flight visors (the 3-D glasses) and your instructions from Dr. Jackie Ogden.
Fun find: Dr. Ogden is named after a real person, who led animals, science and environment at Walt Disney World.
The Link Chamber
Then it's your turn: you take your seat on your banshee and link to your avatar.
After the Ride: The Hidden Handprints
If you exit down the right stairwell, look for three red handprints marked J.C., J.L. and J.R., for James Cameron, Jon Landau and Imagineer Joe Rohde. Whether you pass them depends on where you sat.
Nervous Kids? Send a Scout
Animal Kingdom was our third park day on a trip with my son and his cousin. They didn't want to ride. We'd had some issues with other rides before (Tower of Terror was a bust).
So we all got in line. The kids waited in the Rider Switch area. Two of the three adults checked out the ride and reported back. Then everybody went back together. The kids loved it.
Personal Tip: Going on a ride for the very first time? Use Rider Switch and report back to your kids. Ask the cast member at the entrance how it works that day. Details are on Disney's Rider Switch page.
How to Ride It
The ride is pretty set up. You don't pick your seat, and it locks you in. Just lean forward a little, don't hold the handles too tight and enjoy the ride.
The restraints are rigid and don't fit every body type. Ask a cast member about the test seat outside the attraction before you get in line.
What the Avatar Flight of Passage Ride Is Like
It really feels like flying. You feel the wind, a water mist and the smell of fresh air and water, plus the excitement of going down mountains and flying over herds of animals.
Linking to Your Avatar
Before you take off, a screen scans you and links you to your avatar. Then the flight begins.

Avatar Flight of Passage Ride Play-by-Play (Spoilers!)
Want to be surprised? Skip to the tip below. If you like to know what's coming, here's the flight, moment by moment.
- Takeoff. A burst of light, and you're off.
- Over the forest. You soar over the treetops, with floating mountains on the horizon and other banshees flying alongside. I love the entire ride, but the first drop is also amazing.
- Down to the river. You swoop low over the water and fly over herds of animals.
- The waterfalls. You fly past huge waterfalls, with a giant planet hanging in the sky.
- Through the trees. You weave low under arching branches.
- Over the ocean. You skim the sea with other banshees, dipping right down to the waves.
- The chase. You climb through tall rock pillars, and a huge red and orange predator swoops in.
- Along the cliffs. You dive past cliff walls and flocks of white birds.
- The glowing cavern. Then everything goes dark and starts to glow in blue and pink. My favorite moment is the cave scene in the ride, the cavern with the glowing things.

- The sunset finale. You burst out into a sunset over the sea, with floating mountains and banshees all around you.
Personal Tip: It's not too intense, but being in a big space with big drops and movement can be scary to some. If someone in your group isn't sure, that's what Rider Switch is for.
How to Skip Most of the Wait
Rope drop it. Go at Early Entry and ride Flight of Passage first. Then take the walkway from Pandora to Africa for the Safari. That's The Loop Rule at Animal Kingdom, and my Animal Kingdom one-day itinerary walks through the full loop.
Pro Tip: Later in the day, the Lightning Lane Single Pass is the way around the wait. The Lightning Lane Playbook explains how Single Pass works.
Go early, send a scout if the kids aren't sure, and watch for the glowing cave. See you in Pandora. 🌿
